About Me

Meet Michael Thompson: Your Companion in the World of Exotic Pets

Ever wonder how a kid from the bustling streets of Chicago ended up sharing his home with a crew of scaly, feathered, and eight-legged friends? For me, it all began with a wide-eyed stare through a pet store window and a little bearded dragon who changed everything.

I’m Michael Thompson, a 42-year-old exotic pet devotee and the voice behind Rare Companions. Born and raised in the Windy City, my early years weren’t exactly filled with wildlife—unless you count pigeons and the occasional alley cat.

But at age 10, a chance visit to a neighborhood pet shop flipped the script. There he was: Spike, a bearded dragon with a calm gaze and a spiky charm that hooked me instantly. After some serious pleading with my parents, Spike came home with me, igniting a fascination that’s burned bright ever since.

From Curiosity to Calling

That first encounter set me on a path I couldn’t have predicted. I dove headfirst into books, soaking up everything I could about reptiles, birds, and beyond. As a teen, I traded video games for volunteer shifts at animal shelters and pet stores, getting my hands dirty and my heart full.

College brought a biology degree with a focus on herpetology—yep, that’s the study of reptiles and amphibians—and later, a gig as a zookeeper at the Chicago Zoo. There, I cared for creatures most people only see on TV, from slithering pythons to chattering parrots.

But the more I learned, the more I realized how many pet owners out there needed guidance—real, practical help to make life better for their unusual companions.

So, in 2015, I took a leap and launched Rare Companions. What started as a personal project has grown into a hub where I pour my experience, my stories, and my passion into helping others navigate the wild, wonderful world of exotic pets.

Why I’m Here

My mission with Rare Companions is pretty straightforward: I want to equip you with the know-how to give your exotic pets the life they deserve—happy, healthy, and thriving. But it’s more than just facts and tips.

I’m building a space where we can swap stories, ask questions, and celebrate the quirks of these incredible animals together. To me, every exotic pet is a rare companion, a unique soul that deserves respect, care, and a little bit of awe. Whether you’re just dipping your toes into this world or you’ve got a whole zoo at home, I’ve got your back.

  • Community Tales: Real-life experiences from owners like you, because sometimes the best lessons come from each other.

Why Listen to Me?

I’m not just some guy with a blog—I’ve lived this. Between my zoo days, my studies, and over two decades of raising exotic pets, I’ve got the scars (and stories) to prove it. I’m plugged into groups like the International Reptile Conservation Foundation and the Exotic Pet Owners Association, keeping my finger on the pulse of what’s new and what works.

But the real deal? I’m one of you. I’ve wrestled with a leaky terrarium, cheered a shy pet’s first step toward trust, and lost sleep wondering if I’m doing it right. I get it, and I’m here to share what I’ve figured out along the way.

A Peek Into My World

Right now, my Chicago home is a lively spot thanks to my crew: Draco, a bearded dragon with a flair for drama; Peanut and Butter, a duo of sugar gliders who keep me on my toes; and Charlotte, a tarantula who’s taught me patience in spades.

One time, Draco pulled a Houdini, slipping out of his tank to sunbathe by the oven. After a mini heart attack and a kitchen scavenger hunt, I found him lounging like he owned the place. Moments like that? They’re why I do this.

Who’s This For?

If you’re new to exotic pets and feeling a little lost, welcome—you’re in the right spot. If you’ve been at it a while and want to dig deeper, I’ve got plenty for you too. Or maybe you’re just curious, peering into this oddball world of ours.

Whoever you are, Rare Companions is your place to explore, learn, and connect. I keep things clear and approachable, with a community vibe where your voice matters.

What Drives Me

Owning an exotic pet isn’t just a hobby—it’s a pact. These creatures show us how vast and varied life can be, and we owe them our best. I’m all about education, because the more you know, the better you can care.

I’m big on doing things the right way too—supporting ethical breeders, rescues, and conservation efforts so these animals thrive, here and in the wild. My dream? A network of owners who lift each other up and make life richer for every rare companion out there.

What’s Next

I’ve got big plans brewing for Rare Companions. Think video walkthroughs of tank setups, live chats with pros, and maybe even a spot online where we can all hang out and trade tips.

A Final Thought

Steve Irwin once said, “I have no fear of losing my life—if I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it.” I’m not out wrestling crocs, but I feel that same fire for these animals. They’re my teachers, my buddies, and my inspiration. Through Rare Companions, I hope they’ll spark something in you too.
